Stress, The Silent Assassin of Performance
One of the greatest predictors of performance in business and in life does not turn out to be the IQ but……the emotional stability of the home. Not only will the stability in the home affect our ability to perform at the office but also in the other purpose areas of our life.
Individually the worst kind of stress is the feeling that you have no control over the problem— a feeling that we are helpless. When we allow ourselves to live in the Victim Mindset we perceive life differently and give our power away. We all have one brain and the same brain at home is the same brain we will have at work or school or any where we travel. We are the cause of our successes and our stress. Stress is not outside of us but our responses to the stressors. Pause, slow down and reappraise a given situation and become solution oriented. Problems are never the problem. The problem is our thinking. Either we are solution focused or problem focused.
Our brain is built to deal with stress that lasts about 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The brain is not designed for long term stress when we feel like you have no control. The saber-toothed tiger ate us or we ran away but it was all over in less than a minute. If we have a negative boss or life partner, the saber-toothed tiger can be at our door for years, and we begin to deregulate. If the family is constantly unstable, the saber-toothed tiger can be at our home for years, and the same thing occurs. You can actually watch the brain shrink and neurons wither from long term stress.
Stress damages virtually every kind of cognition that exists. It damages memory and executive function. It can hurt your motor skills. When we are stressed out over a long period of time it disrupts our immune response. We get sicker more often. It disrupts our ability to sleep. We get depressed more easily. Learning to Be Still and Meditate can alleviate many kinds of stress.
The Brain is the CEO of an organization. The CEO has to grow a company and protect it from internal and external threats or the company (in this case our body) will have major problems. We are either growing or protecting. If we are in survival and protection mode we cannot perform properly in our personal or professional life What we know is that if one of our primary relationships is in “disconnect” we will have a more difficult time being effective and successful in the other important “purpose areas” we teach in our MPG’s workshops.
We truly believe living a successful, abundant life is possible. With the hybrid psychology -coaching model we have designed, we believe it is essential to Heal Our Way to Peak Performance and the journey may be different for many. Each person is on their own journey of what they think success is. Teaching success without utilizing the tools of creating a happy, healthy lifestyle is impossible. Happiness precedes success.
