“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.” ~ Viktor E. Frankl
Success of any kind takes intentional living and awareness. Awareness of how we operate as human beings. As much as we all have the desire to be successful, we may lack an understanding of how we are designed and operate from a neuro-biological perspective. We are most certainly wired for connecting and purpose. Studies have shown those who lack meaning and purpose in life (meaningless living) are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and criminal behavior. Victor Frankl in his book Man’s Search For Meaning pointed to research that people who try to fill the void of purpose with other things become more materialistic, a greater need for power, boredom, hatred and other unhealthy traits.
Purpose can be as individualize as snowflakes. No two brains are wired the same so it is likely that no two people have an exact definition of success as most often it is linked to our purpose in life. Once we sense the purpose, we can lean into our vision which gives birth to our goals.
“Striving to find meaning in one’s life is the primary motivational force in man”
So what is success? What does purpose have to do with success? If we ask a hundred people it is most likely that we will get a hundred different ideas of what success is. Every brain is wired differently and every person has their own individual purpose and idea of success or meaning in life. Success may be being the best example of a parent to a child, or running a marathon, or starting a business, or being a high performing teacher. Maybe success is starting an exercise routine after 25 years of inactivity. Regardless of our version of success at the end of the day everyone typically wants to do a better job. Yet, purpose is at the SOUL or CORE of Success because we were created and wired for purpose.
"Everyone has her own specific vocation in life. Therein she cannot be replaced, nor can her life be repeated. Thus everyone's task is as unique as her specific opportunity to implement it. We detect rather than invent our mission in life."
This detection of purpose and idea of success enters when we quiet the noise of life. We then can tap into our inner knowing or soul. In the original Greek text Soul means to breath, to blow life into. Simple breathing exercises can calm our minds and distract us when we are engaged in too many stressors and lead us back to meaning and balance. Another Greek explanation was the direct aftermath of Source breathing His gift of life. In order for any human being to achieve growth and get to the heart of health, wealth and success one must be willing to connect with themselves. This self care, self love, self compassion may mean taking time out for yourself and learning to manage stress. There are many ways to reconnect with yourself and to take care of your soul. Maybe it is a walk in the park, a bike ride, a yoga class, prayer, meditating, or a long belly laugh, hugging your child, engaging in healthy social connections with friends, a consistent exercise routine or eating clean, organic foods. This Soul work helps us to stay connected to what is important and meaningful in life. If our sole purpose is to make lots of money yet we lack genuine purpose this will not lead to a Soul of Success but one of eventual relational poverty. We are wired as social beings. Most often our purpose can be found by serving others. We are all leaders in some way. We lead as parents, teachers, business leaders, coaches, and many other professionals that help lead people to better manage themselves so in turn they can manage the business of their personal and professional lives. We cannot lack integrity in our personal life or professional life as they both are two sides of the same coin. You cannot be unhealthy in one area and expect to be healthy in the other. The same brain at home is the same brain you bring to your profession.
When we take time for ourselves to reconnect with our soul, we can then connect with others in healthy, successful ways both personally and professionally. With purposeful, intentional meaningful living we can get to The SOUL of Success where we will enjoy health, wealth and true success.
